Tips on how to avoid Cholera infection

With the recent reports of Cholera outbreak in Nigeria, it is important for the citizens to be aware of the of preventive measures to take against it.

According to the Minister of health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, the recent outbreak has already taken 74 lives out of the 373 said to be affected. Lagos, Sokoto and Zamfara are states reported to be affected the most.
Health experts have been going round sensitizing people on the preventive measures to be taken against the deadly disease. This BLOG also wants to keep its readers informed with the precautionary tips.


1. BOILING of our drinking water before drinking can be a panacea for outbreak of cholera.

2. Always maintain a clean environment around you.

3. Properly dispose off metabolic waste from the body and avoid use of dirt and unkept public toilets. Also wash your hands with a good soap after the use of these facilities.


A health expert, Dr Joseph Kumba who is also the health director in the Kogi state ministry of health has intensified on the need to ensure clean and hygienic environment, as well as safe drinking water, since cases of cholera had been reported in some parts of the country.
“My advice to people is that they should boil their water, including rain water before drinking and also keep their environment clean to forestall any case of cholera in the state,” he said.

Dr Kumba also appealed to members of the public, who have any case of regular diaorrhea to report directly to their state's ministry of health or visit any well equiped hospital for proper medication.

A consultant physician in the Benue State Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Dr Peter Mbave, harped on the need for members of the public to be conscious of their hygiene, get drinking water from trusted sources, properly dispose their feaces and wash their hands well before touching food.
